Day 1

That’s right! Hear me out. I have a short tale to tell, and this one “ain’t no pretty” picture!

My name is Gabriel Perez, and I am currently working in the Union as a construction laborer. During my time off, I spend most of it learning and creating. I am an artist by heart, but there was a time when something clicked within my consciousness that enabled me to change my trajectory in life.

Before I decided on how to develop games, I joined an indie game development team that needed help with some environment art. I figured, “Heck, this would be an awesome experience” to expand my abilities as an artist, but also to strengthen my communication and teamwork skills.

Boy, was I wrong!

I was so motivated that I kept crunching in work, but in return, the team seemed unmotivated to the point that I wanted to help out in other areas of the development. I understand that we all have a life to live, but this was a blow to my stomach that my next decision would change everything.

My wife, Nicole, introduced me to a documentary about indie game development. It was called “Indie Game: The Movie.” After watching it, there was this crazy intense feeling of power. It was so contagious that it inspired me to get into game development! I wanted to be in the developer’s shoes! I wanted to be that person that can create a game from scratch to a finished product! I wanted to be that person who can attend these events to showcase a game they have whole-heartedly worked on for a while.

Here’s a trailer for “Indie Game: The Movie.”

I was pumped and excited! My journey of becoming an indie game developer started right after. It’s a rough ride. It’s definitely not easy either. But that is one reason why I love it. It’s challenging and rewarding.

And there is so much to learn!

Thank you for reading!
