Unity3D: Reflection Probes Vs. Screen Space Reflections!
What are light probes and screen space reflections? Which one should I choose?
A reflection probe captures the surrounding of the environment. It then converts and stores the surrounding data into a cubemap. It will allow objects with reflective material to acquire the data and thus, add a reflection of the environment bouncing off from the material.
They are cheap reflections because they are not accurate, as seen in the above image. They are great for mobile games, though!
Screen Space Reflection
The screen space reflection is a post-processing effect. It generates reflections by using screen-space data.
They are accurate and more expensive than reflection probes but can also be optimized. The image above shows the accuracy of the effect.
In conclusion, if you are building a mobile game, use reflection probes. They are cheap. If you are developing a high-end game, then go for screen space reflections.
